Urban farming to mitigate hidden hunger in the slums of Kampala

Short description

This project will focus on urban farming techniques to mitigate/address hidden hunger challenges in the slums of Kampala, Uganda which harbors a large percentage of children and youths who have little or no access to foods rich in micronutrients.

The problem we aim to solve

The concrete phenomena we want to tackle is malnutrition which is caused by deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. We are choosing malnutrition because we want to focus on the urban poor who live below a dollar and cannot afford decent meals. These people are being affected by nutrition related diseases which we believe – if we introduce urban farming and provide them with the necessary materials and training – will enable them to not only change their diets, but also create an income earning avenue for them which in turn will improve their livelihood.

Our solution

Human productivity requires one to be of sound mind, healthy and physically fit. For this to happen one has to eat the right foods which contain essential micronutrients that will boost the body and its organs. Here we have a scenario of the urban poor who can hardly afford 2 meals a day and are faced with various challenges which have hindered their development. This is where we propose Urban farming – a phenomenon which does not only sort out their health issues by being able to grow their own foods, but also enables them to sell what they have grown to earn an additional income. This can be used to sort out issues like clothing, school fees and more. On top of that we hope that farming will keep them engaged, which in turn will reduce the crime rate which is as a result of redundancy. So introducing urban farming to the slums of Kampala is a solution in a solution because it creates multiple mitigation strategies.

The innovativeness of our approach

My approach not only improves the health benefits from the foods grown, but it also enhances the livelihood of these people by providing an income for them through the sale of their produce.
