The international student competition “Students4Kids – Together Against Hidden Hunger” is a project of the Assmann Foundation for Prevention in cooperation with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The competition is organised by the Helliwood media & education project office in the Förderverein für Jugend und Sozialarbeit e. V. (Association for the Promotion of Youth and Social Work). (Helliwood), Marchlewskistraße 27,10243 Berlin, Germany. The following terms and conditions apply exclusively to the competition and participation.
1. Eligibility and eligibility requirements
1.1. Participation is free of charge and independent of the purchase of goods or services. By entering the competition, the participant accepts these conditions of participation.
1.2. A person can participate by submitting a project idea (“active participation”, see 1.4) and by supporting a project idea (“passive participation”, see 1.5).
1.3. Students of all disciplines at higher education institutions in Germany, Switzerland and Uganda are eligible to participate.
Employees of the F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention and Helliwood, their relatives and other persons and companies involved in the conception and implementation of this competition are excluded from participation. Participant of the contest is the legitimate owner of the e-mail address that was provided when registering for the contest. Minors are not eligible.
1.4. Active participation requires that the participant presents his/her project idea on www.students4kids.org in the provided registration form and sends it to email@example.com in English or German. Since the competition is explicitly aimed at students, a written proof of their studies must also be submitted; this may also be submitted at a later date. After submitting the project idea via the form, the Assmann Foundation for Prevention will publish the project on the website www.students4kids.org at the latest at the beginning of the voting phase (see below, 2.2). After publication, the participant may not make any changes to the submission. Each person may only take an active part in the competition once, i. e. submit only one project idea.
1.5. Passive participation is achieved by voting for a project idea on the www.students4kids.org website during the voting phase. Each person may support each project idea once per day. A voice once given cannot be withdrawn.
1.6. We expressly reserve the right to verify the identity of the participant or the winner. Wrong information provided by a participant with regard to his or her identity and actions taken by a participant which are likely to mislead, distort or disrupt the procedures described in these Terms and Conditions of Participation or attempt to mislead, will result in the participant’s exclusion from the competition and the termination of any and all claims for prize money.
2. Implementation of the competition
2.1. Entries: With the start of the competition, the option to participate by submitting a form with an entry will be activated on the www.students4kids.org online platform. This includes the description of an idea sketch within a given form available in English and German. The phase of the idea submission (including upload) begins on 01.02.2018 and ends on 10.06.2018, 11:59 pm. Only project ideas that have been received by e-mail by this date and that meet the requirements of these conditions of participation will take part in the competition. The project partners reserve the right to check all uploaded contributions within 2 working days and, if necessary, to exclude a contribution in accordance with section 5. Subsequent submissions will no longer be considered in the jury elections, regardless of the reason for the delay. The Assmann Foundation for Prevention and the F. A. Z. are not liable for technical faults of any kind whatsoever, in particular failures of the telephone network, the network, electronics or computers, or other circumstances leading to a delayed receipt of the participation message.
2.2. Voting phase: The voting phase begins on 11.06.2018 and ends on 17.06.2018 at 11:59 pm. During the voting phase, passive participants can vote for a project idea. Passive participation is only possible during the voting phase. If, contrary to these conditions of participation, a project idea is submitted more than once or if a participant participates actively several times, only the votes for the first published project idea count. The votes for the following project ideas will not be considered. After the voting phase has been completed, the number of votes is included in the evaluation of the project ideas by a jury.
2.3. First expert examination: After the voting phase has been completed, the project ideas will be reviewed by a jury (consisting of representatives of the Assmann Foundation for Prevention as well as members of the F. A. Z., Helliwood and voluntary experts) until 22.06.2018 and, depending on the number of ideas submitted, the best ones selected (max. ten). The results of the votes cast in the voting (see 2.2.) must be taken into account. The finalists will be notified promptly by e-mail using the information provided at the time of registration. The finalist must confirm receipt of the notification in writing without delay, but no later than within one week, and provide the necessary information for further contact. Otherwise, the project partners are entitled to select a new finalist.
2.4. Concept: From 25.06.2018 to 26.08.2019, the selected students (finalists) will be asked to elaborate their submitted sketches for a concrete concept. The finalists receive individual feedback and a structure to guide the concept. During the conception phase, the selected teams receive a scholarship of 500 euros per team. A maximum of two people per team will receive the scholarship.
2.5. Second technical examination: After completion of the conceptual design, the finalists’ documents will again be reviewed by the jury (see 2.3.) until September 7, 2018. On the basis of this evaluation, three teams are invited by the project partners to present their concepts in a pitch at the summit. The teams invited to the competition will be notified promptly by e-mail using the information provided at the time of registration. The teams must confirm receipt of the notification in writing without delay, but no later than one week after receipt of the notification. Otherwise, the project partners are entitled to invite another team.
2.6. Preparation of the pitch: The three teams invited by the project partners will be given time from 10.09.2018 to 5.10.2018 to prepare their presentations. For this purpose, the initiative provides them with specific guidelines regarding the scope and the permitted aids. During the preparation of the pitch, the finalist teams will be supported with a scholarship of 600 euros per team. A maximum of two people per team will receive the scholarship.
2.7. Summit / Winner’s Choice: After completion of the preparations, the Summit will take place. The selected students can participate directly on site or via video conference. Here, students are given the opportunity to present their concept to a jury of experts in a pitch. The winner or the winning team will receive a subsidy of 10,000 EUR.
2.8. Alumni Network: Members of the Students4Kids alumni network are the finalists of the competitions that have already been held and all future finalists.
2.9. Implementation: The aim is to subsequently implement the winning concept chosen at the summit, possibly with the help of companies, research institutions, local partners and experts.
2.10. The winner or the winning team undertakes to document the implementation of their project idea with e.g. pictures or videos. They further make available the documentation to the Assmann Foundation for Prevention, the F. A. Z. and Helliwood, who are allowed to publish it on their website.
2.11. The prizes are not transferable. The winner accepts any necessary changes to the prize due to factors beyond the control of the contest organiser.
3. Assurance and consent
3.1. Every active participant agrees to the upload and publication of the content provided by him/her on www.students4kids.org. He agrees to the publication of his name and the project title.
3.2. Each active participant guarantees to use only material which does not infringe the rights of third parties (in particular copyrights, industrial property rights or personal rights) or which violates applicable law. Insofar as rights of third parties exist, the participant is obliged to obtain the necessary consent of the third party. The participant further undertakes to comply with applicable penal laws and youth protection regulations and not to disseminate or display any content that is racist, pornographic, obscene, offensive or inappropriate for minors. The participant shall indemnify the project partners against all claims of third parties due to infringement of their rights.
3.3. By submitting the competition entry, the participant irrevocably grants F. A. Z. and the Assmann Foundation for Prevention a non-exclusive right to use and publish the submitted documents.
The F. A. Z. and the Assmann Foundation for Prevention may use, edit and modify the competition entries without any restrictions as to time, space or content and may also pass them on to third parties – irrespective of transmission, carrier and storage techniques. No remuneration shall be paid.
4. Changes to and exclusion from the idea competition
4.1. The achievements of the student competition are not negotiable, exchangeable or transferable. The issuing of credit notes or the payment of benefits in cash is excluded.
4.2. The F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention reserves the right to replace the services with other services of a similar value, if the said services cannot be provided for reasons beyond the contest organiser’s sphere of responsibility.
4.3. The F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention are entitled to exclude participants from the competition who violate the conditions of participation or provide incorrect personal data, use unfair means and/or attempt to participate in the competition several times or manipulate the ranking list. Likewise, the F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention and Helliwood may also exclude contributions with immoral, illegal or other criminal or liability law-based or even thematically inappropriate content from the competition.
4.4. If there is a reason for exclusion, the F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention – also retrospectively – is entitled to withdraw benefits and to reclaim services already rendered or to demand compensation for loss of value.
The project partners assume no liability that the website and any links are available and that the participants are technically free of errors and completely available. In particular, within the legal limits, no liability is assumed for damages and losses or deletions of data resulting from technical faults or delays, viruses or similar reasons.
6. Data protection
6.1. When collecting, processing and using the participant’s personal data, the project partners always observe the data protection regulations.
6.2. By participating in the ideas competition, the participant declares his or her consent that his or her personal data will be stored by F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention and Helliwood for the purpose of carrying out the competition (in particular, evaluation, identification and notification of the winner, prize settlement), used and, if necessary, passed on to any cooperation partners for the purpose of carrying out the competition. The participant is entitled to revoke this consent at any time during the competition by sending an e-mail with the subject “Students4Kids – Together against Hidden Hunger” to firstname.lastname@example.org and thus withdraw from participation in the competition.
7.1. The F. A. Z., the Assmann Foundation for Prevention are entitled to terminate the competition prematurely or change the conditions of participation. This applies in particular to cases of force majeure and in the event that a proper execution of the competition cannot be guaranteed for technical and/or legal reasons. In the event of a change in the terms and conditions of participation, the participant will be informed immediately by e-mail of this change; the participant will be granted a reasonable period of time within which he/she can object to the new terms and conditions of participation. The changed conditions of participation shall be deemed to have been accepted if the participant does not object within the deadline. The participant may not refuse his or her consent without substantial reasons.
7.2. Any liability for damages against the organisers (F. A. Z., Assmann Foundation for Prevention) and their bodies, employees and vicarious agents arising from or in connection with the competition, regardless of the legal grounds, is limited, as far as legally permissible, to cases of intent or gross negligence.
7.3. Should any provision of these Conditions of Participation be or become invalid in whole or in part, this shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions. An ineffective provision shall be replaced by a provision which is legally possible and which comes closest to the ineffective provision in terms of content. The same applies to possible loopholes.
7.4. The laws of the Federal Republic of Germany shall apply.
7.5. Legal recourse is excluded.
