Water and Agriculture – the Key to World Nutrition

Water and Agriculture – the Key to World Nutrition

Water is next to soil the most important resource for agriculture and thus also for food security. About 70 percent of the fresh water used worldwide is currently used solely in agricultural production, which means that these possibilities are almost exhausted. According to the UN the demand of water will grow around 20% solely in agriculture until 2030 measured by the current production techniques.

Access to (clean) fresh water will prospectively be more essential than ever before, for whether it is possible to adequately secure food quality and how a region which is affected by water deficiency will remain politically and economically stable.

The 9th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) from January 19 to 21, 2017 in Berlin deliberately discussed the future water supply with more than 1500 participants from more than 100 countries. With the support of education, training and know-how in sustainable water management and the establishment of corresponding structures for the use of water-saving technologies, it is necessary to intensify the responsible handling of the resource water worldwide. This also includes limiting projects in development aid, which require an additional supply of water in natural water-poor regions.
