The Global Burden of Disease in Zambia

The Global Burden of Disease in Zambia

Changes with regard to life expectancy and to the frequency of diseases are directly linked to changing dietary habits.

The country profile in The Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study shows relevant developments in Zambia in comparison with data from the sub-Saharan region. One diagram shows for instance that the frequency of iron deficiency anaemia in Zambia increased by 8% in the period between 1990 and 2013.

According to figures issued by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington, the average life expectancy of men in Zambia was 58 years and 55.6 years for women. HIV/AIDs, malaria and respiratory diseases are the most frequent causes of death. Among contaminated drinking water and unprotected sexual intercourse, malnutrition of children and mothers is one of the decisive risk factors for diseases and early death.
