Short description

Corn 4 Life will be a large scale corn growing project aimed at producing, processing corn to feed the highly malnourished people of Karamoja region in northern Uganda and distributing corn products.

The problem we aim to solve

Karamojja and the surrounding regions are highly faced with poor health as a result of poor feeding due to lack nutritious foods and the unfavorable climate all leading to malnutrition, undernourishment, and micro-nutrient deficiencies in people.

This project is aimed at overcoming malnutrition and hunger at large in the people of Karamojja and to stop its deficiencies like high mortality rates in the elders, low birth weights, impaired mental development in babies and increased risk of chronic diseases and fatigue in the adolescents.

Our solution

“The ‘hidden hunger’ due to micro-nutrient deficiency does not produce hunger as we know it. You might not feel it in the belly, but it strikes at the core of your health and vitality.” said by Kul C. Gautam (former deputy executive director of UNICEF).

Therefore, according to what a silent killer Hidden Hunger is, Corn4Life will be able to overcome this great problem in the lives of the people in karamojja and the surrounding areas by growing corn/maize that will replace all the expensive foods because of its richness in nutrients from various corn types like flint, dent, sweet, and popcorn. Corn is nutritious, providing fiber, which aids in digestion, plus folate, thiamin, phosphorus, vitamin C, and magnesium (about 10% of the daily value for each).

This project will also benefit the people of the region through eradications and sensitization basing on the healthy benefits from corn because It supplies a good dose of two antioxidants linked to eye and skin health called zeaxanthin and lutein. Eating fresh corn on the cob also gives you a good amount of the daily dietary fiber you need, along with some complex carbohydrates that are a good energy source.

The project will provide a surplus of corn and its products which will be sold off to the nearest local markets and the international large market like the UN and WFP because of its major target for large scale production using mechanized farming. These realized funds will enable the project to sustain itself in the long run and be able to promote the development of the region economically.
