Women in the Fight against Hidden Hunger in Africa

Short description

The project will empower women by ensuring that female farmers in Uganda get access to information on good agronomic practices and quality seeds. The project also seeks to empower women to advance mechanisms geared to diversify children’s diets.

The problem we aim to solve

This project seeks to address the lack of food and inadequate diets. Too many people are caught in the poverty trap which greatly affects Uganda’s productivity. Food shortages in the food-insecure northeast are affecting school attendance. During dry season there is extreme drought is also present, at other times there is too much rain. Farmers never know what the seasons will bring. The cost of food is continuing to rise in Uganda. Rising food prices means rising malnutrition.

Our solution

Our immediate solution will be promotion of gardening of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, and other crops in homes and communities, and encourage sensitization on their consumption this will be one way to reduce micronutrient deficiency and to help people climb out of poverty. Mobilization and sensitization of the beneficiaries on food preparation methods that can make the nutrients easier to digest, while other preparation methods destroy nutrients.

Our innovative approach will focus on the introduction of a 12-day nutritional circles program. This arrangement will involve identification of the children who are malnourished in the community. Weigh them to determine the weight and height for the age including taking their Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) to determine their nutrition status. Mothers will be sensitized on the children’s nutritional status.

Children whose MUAC is in red will be referred to the health centers/hospitals for further handling, children with a yellow MUAC will be enrolled onto a 12 days’ nutrition circle to improve their status and through teaching their mothers how to prepare and feed children with local available food to improve the nutrition status. After 12 days children’s MUAC will be measured again to determine the level of improvement.

The innovativeness of our approach

Our community mobilization and sensitization on the importance of local food (vegetables, fruits, vines and tubers) aimed to improve the dietary intake are innovative. Mothers will be asked to provide local foods available in the community. We shall gather every evening for 12 days to prepare and feed the children.

The general approach to the implementation of this action will be consultation, mobilization, capacity building and partnership. Given the past history and experience that Government programs haven’t been fully shared with communities and other stakeholders, consultation is very important as it will build trust among the different stakeholders.

Technologies and Methods

The approach will be direct implementation. On monitoring and evaluation we shall focus on developing monitoring plans and tools for the project and will spearhead the monitoring of achievements based on the indicators. The monitoring and evaluation officer will work with the team that will be selected at the project launch meeting. Project team meetings will assess the progress and achievement of objectives. At the end of each project year, an internal evaluation of the achievements against targets will be assessed and impact or signs of impact outlined.

Potential Partners

Potential partners are government programs on poverty like Operation wealth creation, NAADS, and health programs, primary schools and health institutions, village health teams and local council structures. We aim at involving other stakeholders like the school management committees, PTAs, board of governors, health management committees and NAADS program coordinators in the implementation but not through agreements.
