The Initiative to Fight Malnutrition among the Children

Short description

The project will provide basic agricultural skills on how best utilize the cultivation season to local communities. They will based in Yumbe district and in BidiBidi since it is the largest refugee camp in Uganda.

The problem we aim to solve

Malnutrition is a major cause of death of young children in the camp and more also in the hosting communities in West Nile Uganda. The refugee population also has shortages of food supply with beans and sorghum as the only source of nutrients. Based on our research the initiative will focus on reducing malnutrition amongst children.

The project team will use massive sensitization of local population on the cause, effects and how to fight hidden hunger. I am convinced people don’t know or even have an idea about hidden Hunger.

Our solution

The initiative will teach the local population the best farm practices to grow vegetables like cabbages, onions, carrots, okra, among others, using urban gardening farming systems since they have limited land to cultivate. Not only providing the teaching services to the population, it will also teach through demonstration farms so that the local community can learn from the leaders of the organization.

The initiative will also provide seeds or grow seedlings at its demonstration farms which will be given out to the local population based on the number of children one has in the family. Members of the organization will keep the records and monitor the progress of the project by visiting the local population. They will ask them questions like: What do they think of the idea? What are the challenges faced by the farmers or local population? How can these challenges be addressed best? Their feedback will contribute to greater progress and achievements for the organization.

The initiative will also provide fertilizers to the farmers or local population in order to improve on the yields of the crops. As a matter of fact, the vegetables which they grow will not only remain as food for them but also a source of income when they sell them. This will lead to improved standard of living among them and more effectively achieve the objective of eliminating malnutrition amongst children.

The innovativeness of our approach

The initiative to fight malnutrition amongst children has a unique way of teaching the farmers on the latest farming techniques, provide fast growing and good yielding crops, and provide technical skills through the demonstration farms.

The other innovative approach that the initiative to fight malnutrition amongst children will be interacting directly with the farmers or local population.  The project also teaches the people how to safely store the surplus from production. Farmers will use the traditional tools for the cultivation making the work cost effective.

Technologies and Methods

Our technologies and methods include:

  • Urban cultivation techniques that ensure high yields in limited piece of land
  • Use of agricultural extension workers to help in direct contact and interaction with the farmers
  • Use of demonstration farms set up as a learning area
  • Giving of seeds and seedling to the local population including the fertilizers
  • The initiative will also provide services in marketing of the products of the farmers
  • Massive awareness and campaign against hidden hunger

Potential Partners

The humanitarian organizations that are working hand in hand with the refugee populations are the once that will be helpful for the implementation of the program for example life gospel ministries jinja organization has been in direct involvement with the local population in providing some of the skills for farming to the local population.
