One Egg per Child

Short description

One Egg per Child is designed to supply one egg per day to any of the undernourished children from underprivileged families in Gulu, Uganda. This will enable us to eradicate the issue of hidden hunger in Gulu because eggs have very high nutritional value.

The problem we aim to solve

The phenomenon of hidden hunger that One Egg per Child wants to tackle is growth failure and underweight in children. In Gulu, there are many children who have been affected by malnutrition and this has led to reduced mental capacity, stunted growth, frequent infections, and impaired mental development. So we have decided to tackle the issue of poor growth which is normally caused by an inadequate amount of proteins in the diet. We want children to grow mentally strong and physically fit. Children have the right to grow to their full growth potential.

Our solution

To fight against children malnutrition and hidden hunger in Gulu, a team of three students at Gulu University are working together to run the One Egg per Child project. This project requires to establish poultry farms of egg laying chicken breeds (layers) so that we can have enough eggs for supply. Our poultry farms will be managed in collaboration with some community members as we teach them poultry farming skills. In collaboration with local leaders, we shall identify all the families that have children with malnutrition problems and make sure each child gets one egg per day. Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on planet. An egg contains all the nutrients that are required to turn a single cell into a baby chicken and this proves how nutritious it is. A single egg has Vitamin A,D,E,K, Vitamin B2,B5,B6 and B12. It also has Calcium, Phosphorus,Selenium and Zinc plus 77 calories, 6 grams of protein and 5grams of healthy fats. Provided these nutrients contained in an egg, we believe that if a child has at least one egg per day, there will be no more hidden hunger or malnutrition and this will improve the growth and health of children in Gulu communities.

The innovativeness of our approach

Our approach is very innovative because it requires a collaboration between university students and the community. The approach of tackling hidden hunger lies in producing high quality eggs using available resources. These eggs are easy to produce and supply. Along the way, people in the community will be empowered with skills and some financial support that allow them to establish their own poultry farms. This will help them get enough eggs to the families and hopefully allow them to sell other complementary foods.

Technologies and Methods

Our poultry farm will use deep litter system to keep the laying chickens. We use brooders to regulate the heat and we also need power to provide lighting. We have a telephone line to receive the concerns and problems from the community. To supply the eggs to the families who live far away, we shall use motorbikes to transport the eggs. To produce highly nutritious eggs, we shall take proper care off the chickens and ensure that we feed them with clean and quality feeds.

Potential Partners

Uganda has different farms that would help us in egg production.

For example, Ugachick Poultry Breeders Ltd, Nyala Poultry Ltd, and Hill Top Farm Ltd. All of these are well established farms that would help us in the establishment of our poultry farm. Then we would also need to partner with local governance to help us identify malnourished children and sensitize the community about the importance of eating eggs.
