Nutrition for Sustainable Development

Short description

Yearly, Zambia loses more than 170 million of US$ Dollars to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Scaling up core micro-nutrient interventions would cost far much less than 7 million of US$ Dollars per year.

Which problem do I/we aim to solve ? and why?

Poor infant feeding practices is the problem.
The idea aims to support women and their families to practice optimal breastfeeding and ensure timely and adequate complementary feeding. Because breast milk fulfills all nutritional needs of infants, boasts their immunity and reduces exposure to infections.

My/Our idea for a solution

Key action to address malnutrition resulting from poor infant feeding practices is to continue and expand community programs that increase breastfeeding, such as the baby friendly health facility initiatives, institutional and community positive mindset in Zambia.

Why is my/our solution an innovative idea and tackles the challenge from a new
perspective

The challenge of poor infant feeding practices in many communities is old, almost 30% of all newborns do not receive adequate breast milk within one hour of birth and 30% of infants under six months are not exclusively breasted

How is my/our idea feasible?

The idea intends to support women and their families to practice optimal breastfeeding and ensure timely and adequate complementary feeding. Breast milk fulfills all nutritional needs of infants up to six or more of age, boosts child immunity, and reduces exposure to infections.

Which methods and channels do I/we want to utilise?

The idea want to use the both the public and private/ community radios stations. Because the majority Zambian women live in the remote-rural areas of the country. And most of these breastfeeding women are illiterate. Local languages will be highly considered in the execution of the idea.

What’s my/our expected outcome and improvement?

To increase breastfeeding and improve child feeding practices. This will reduce malnutrition resulting from poor breastfeeding practices and improve the nutritional health of the children.

What's my/our budget and which partners I/we would expect to be valuable

Travel expenses- $1,500/ Radio breastfeeding advocacy program expenses-$3,500

Sensitization & training workshops on importance of Breastfeeding- $5,000
