Using a community-strength centered approach to micronutrient deficiency this project will create awareness and empower the communities to diversify the foods grown in their homes to include nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables in kitchen gardens.
The problem we aim to solve
We majorly want to tackle micronutrient deficiency in pregnant and lactating mothers, HIV positive people and infants between 0 and 5 years of age in rural areas, refugee camps (West Nile region), areas affected with calamities like epidemics, drought and famine (Karamoja and Teso regions), and the poverty stricken regions (Busoga region). Geographically, our priority will be in the rural area, refugee camps, poverty stricken areas and areas affected with calamities like drought and famine.
The provision of formulated rations to people suffering from malnutrition is not a sustainable method to fight micronutrient deficiency since the problems will fully manifest again at the end of the project. In our project, the people will not only be taught what to eat and how to prepare it but also how to produce it. This will be done by introducing the idea of setting up kitchen gardens in every home which will contain fruits and vegetables, and teaching people how to effectively raise some domestic livestock with emphasis being put on domestic chicken so as to provide a cheap source of animal dietary components.
Our approach will not provide temporary services like the government and some other organizations are doing but instead, we shall offer community-strength centered empowerment of the people within their available own resources with very minimal extra input requirements.
This idea will also improve the household incomes of the people because there will be increased agricultural output and the people will be able to sell off the surplus output and access other basic needs since we shall also train the people on general agricultural production of the staple foods in the respective local residences.
The whole training process will be based on the ideas of the local people and their ways of life so that no invasive ideas are introduced which may affect the adoption of these technologies by the people. We shall also base on the local and cultural leadership systems within the different areas to make the local people “own” the project.
The innovativeness of our approach
Since most of people in Uganda produce their own food, there is need to empower them on how and what to produce if we are to eradicate micronutrient deficiency in Uganda. Also, we use ideas which fit the socio-cultural settings of the different societies in Uganda. Therefore the sensitization of the people about the existence and effects of micronutrient deficiency and then empowering them on how and what to produce foe their consumption within their own local confines is an innovation that can create lasting solutions to the problem of micronutrient deficiency in Uganda.
Technologies and Methods
The mobilization process will be effected using local radio stations, local council and cultural leaderships in the different communities. The people will then be taught in gatherings at village, parish and sub-county levels. We shall approach concepts of urban farming by using demonstration gardens and model farms to act as study sites. We shall also provide reading materials in local languages and with proper visual aids to aid the learning processes. We shall introduce rewards for people who have e.g. set up the best kitchen gardens at home.
