Short description
Chronic under-nutrition/Stunting is very common in the Sub Saharan Africa and Zambia is not an exception. This is so prevalent because of the diets consisting mainly of staple foods lacking most of the essential micro-nutrients.
Which problem do I/we aim to solve ? and why?
Chronic Under nutrition/Stunting is a very serious problem in Zambia. So far the figures as recently reported by Central statistics (Office CSO), go as high as 46%. With such alarming numbers we need an intervention that can help reduce and eradicate this scourge. This is more prevalent in the rural areas among the under five children country wide. Intervention has been started but the problem is still there.
My/Our idea for a solution
Education and sensitization of all parents of the importance of food nutrients and micro-nutrients, which will be based on the readily available foods in that viscinity. Each area will shift their production technique to suit what foods are common in their area, rather than growing solely maize. As empowerment, food processing, preparation, utilization, complimentary food and RDAs are to be taught to everybody.
Why is my/our solution an innovative idea and tackles the challenge from a new
perspective
Because it brings all players to the table and doesn’t shift the people to another area. Everything is done in their village with the involvement of all family members, which brings the aspect of long lasting sustainability and sense of belonging to the people. Working together as a community and processing food
How is my/our idea feasible?
Since I am going to tackle the problem from the root, which is the consumers and producers at the same time. Rural farmers produce about 80% of the maize in Zambia, but have difficulties in marketing. Knowledge and improved methods of food processing will be disseminated across all areas, with minimum costs and labour.
Which methods and channels do I/we want to utilise?
Methods to be used will be both the Social media and others e.g;phones, radios,T,newspapers,Farmers magazines, leaflets, Focus groups, motivational speakers, demonstrations, meetings,Workshops,Serminars,Drama,SketchesPEA
What’s my/our expected outcome and improvement?
Reduction of Malnutrition specifically stunting as reported by CSO.At least to a single figure or none at all in 2020 preferably.Reduced maternal and child mortalities due to undernutrition, diarhrea, infections, improper food processing technques and poverty.A healthy nation, healthy children, brilliant future leaders and economic empowerment
What's my/our budget and which partners I/we would expect to be valuable
About 50 – 100 families, purchase of processing equipment, inputs, food, processing house-community Initiative = 5,000 – 10,000 Euros. Partners will be:UNICEF, USAID, FAO, WHO, MAL, MOH, Civic leaders, Churches, World Bank, PAM
