End Child Malnutrition Initiative

Short description

Our project idea proposes the establishment of health education sessions and demonstration gardens in the community with a formal malnutrition treatment program at Nyakibale hospital. We want to ensure sustainability and affordability, sensitizing the community on food security.

The problem we aim to solve

Some areas have too much food but still experience food insecurity, so many community members sell their food for others things such as school fees. They cannot keep enough food to take them through the season and there are no more storage facilities for food like granaries. Our communities lack capacity building and agricultural skills. So this is why many people in the communities suffer of hunger and starvation.

Our solution

The project will be responsible for educating the community on how to produce enough food and store enough to take them through the season. Educating them on how to create small gardens at home can also help reduce hunger.

Community mobilization and sensitization, home visits, and radio talk shows about malnutrition can also help recognize it and prevent it.

Also involvement of government facilities, its officials and specialized caretakers can reduce hunger through treatment and referral of affected members.

Most of the communities have one or two foods in common and usually feeds on that kind of foods so organizations like NAADS will help in giving people other foods for planting or teaching them improved methods of food farming, storing and keeping them safe from damage.

The project will establish a treatment centre at Nyakibale hospital for treating inpatients for moderate to severe malnutrition and will provide weekly post discharge follow up in the health facilities.

The project will train hospital staffs, students, and community members in management of malnutrition to sustain the project.

The curriculum for teaching will include workshops, demonstrations, discussions on nutrition therapy, admission criteria, high energy porridge and food rations, and others.

This project will build from an existing small nutrition unit equipped with equipment for malnutrition management. Three community health centres will be referral sites and outreach sites for this project. With this involvement the project will benefit the population and build trust.

The innovativeness of our approach

This project will be innovative because it will be a model for successful and self-sustainable programs that will serve the communities in Rukungiri and other health facilities. This project will start demonstration gardens at schools, health facilities and at the hospital to help teach mothers how to start a garden at home.

Technologies and Methods

The technologies we shall use include computers, projectors, video shows, generators, workshops, printers and mobile phones.

To communicate the information to the communities, we will require the help of community leaders, radio talk shows, religious leaders and schools.

Home visits and announcements on the nearby health facilities will enable the transfer of information.

The delivery of training and services will include practical sessions, discussions, demonstrations and starting of demonstration gardens at nearby health facilities.
