A Voice of Nutrition-Project (AVON‐ZAMBIA)

Short description

AVON Zambia will help and support women and their families to practice optimal breast feeding.

Which problem do I/we aim to solve ? and why?

For many years micronutrient deficits, prevalence data are scarce. Scientists have not reached a consensus on standard recommended intakes for many of the 19 micronutrients that directly influence physical and mental health development.

Hidden hunger can curtail social economic development, particularly in low and middle income countries. The nature of the hunger burden facing Zambia is increasingly complex. Developing countries are moving from traditional diet based on minimally processed foods to highly processed energy dense micronutrient? poor foods and drinks, which in turn leads to obesity and chronic diseases.

Our/My idea for a solution

AVON?Zambia will help and support women and their families to practice optimal breast feeding and ensure timely and adequate complementary feeding. Breast milk fulfils all nutritional needs of infants up to six months of age, boosts their immunity, and reduces exposure to infections in high HIV settings and micronutrient deficiency.

AVON?Zambia will help by educating the community to prevent and treat childhood infection and other diseases. There should be also continued feeding during illness, this is important too.

Why is my/our solution an innovative idea and tackles the challenge from a new perspective

The idea is even more innovative as it extends to the following aspects:
– It will provide clear data and information on emerging evidence and strategy
– Ensure effective delivering of nutrition services at all levels
– Effevtive research methodology in finding new prospectives to fight hidden hunger at a higher level
– Shaping the nutrition policies more effectively
– Having nutrition campaigns
– Engaging civil societies, CBOs, NGOs and the government.

How is my/our idea feasible?

The idea is feasible in the sense that the primary targets are our communities, health centers like clinics and hospitals, food industries and the agriculture sector whom we live with within our communities. The project have potential youths who are ready to be trained and deliver these services. Once empowered, there is surety of a good community service delivery. A lot of the youths have the skills and knowledge but there is nothing to make them work and contribute to the well being of all.

Which methods and channels do I/we want to utilise?

I would like to make use of smart phones because of the widely growing technology across the globe. Everything is falling in the hand of technology, this why there is fast and easy communication.

In Zambia radio and Television have extremely wide coverage compared to any other form of communication and is a lot more accessible to the majority of the population.

What’s my/our expected outcome and improvement?

There is going to be relevant micronutrients to foods and beverages that people already enjoy eating. Then when hunger is taken away from poverty, poverty becomes a lot more manageable. There shall be improved nutritional security and awareness about the hidden hunger in our communities and the nation at large.

They will be an establishment of a good network?system between this project and all industries that handle food for fortification standards and monitoring.
