A Slap for Hidden Hunger in Uganda

Short description

A slap for hidden Hunger in Uganda. Hunger in Uganda is faced by most of the families, however it is covered and unknown. If one does not say or narrate a scenario of their family life then no one can say they face hunger. Though there are some measures being put in place, still it exists in many various areas.

The problem I aim to solve

I have often witnessed this phenomenon here in Uganda, where most of the people practice subsistence farming: They only produce small amounts of food, but once the harvest is done people sell their foodstuffs of and are left with not enough to eat. People in Uganda have gone a stray from the old fashion of food preservation or storage for future. This has affected most of the people’s lives and due to that fact, there is no food. People are starving silently!

My solution

Educating and teaching people about saving the little food they produce for the future, not selling it. Health educators, nutritionists have to reach the common people: They should not just talk about nutrition and health on the media, because most people do not have access to those anyway. Trainers and specialists have to go into the hotspots, meet with people, talk to them and teach about food storages and preservations such that due to season changes people will not be affected by lack of food.

The innovativeness of my approach

Reaching out to the villages or going into far-away rural areas would help in reducing the hidden hunger in Uganda. These are the areas we find that most of the food we buy in Ugandan towns, shops or in the markets come from. Local people grow crops, they have banana plantations and whatsoever but everything they produce is sold out for money. When the season changes, rain’s missing or the weather makes life difficult, they suffer hunger and malnutrition because the sold their entire harvest of the previous year. People go on only one meal a day and that meal in most cases is eaten late in the afternoon so as to act as their lunch and supper at same time.

Technologies and Methods

Focus group discussions help in time saving when sensitizing people about food storage for the future. This is great because it saves the time that would have been spent in doing door to door visits and sensitization or education. Even requesting for a special time in various gatherings of people like churches is very possible to capture many people for that information about hunger and prevention.

Potential Partners

Potential partners are health organizations, UN agencies and the Government of Uganda. Some partners are already doing something to stop hunger, we are grateful. However there is still a big hunger problem in far to reach areas and partners surely need to go there physically not just talking about health and hunger on the media.
