Severe Malnutrition of Children as a Focal Point in the Latest Emergency Appeal of UNICEF in January 2017

“More and more children are fleeing wars and natural catastrophes and are in great danger through disease, violence and exploitation. The silent tragedies of malnutrition and hunger are often overlooked. We need to help in time before it is too late for many children” says the current emergency appeal, which UNICEF has published annually and currently for the year 2017.

According to UNICEF experts, 7.5 million children and adolescents suffer from severe, often life-threatening malnutrition, especially in Syria and the neighboring countries of Yemen, Iraq, South Sudan and Nigeria. But also in less respected conflict regions such as Afghanistan, Somalia or the Central African Republic, the lives of many children are in danger because of nutrient deficits.

The UNICEF Emergency Appeal 2017 collects funds

  • to treat at least 3.1 million children with acute malnutrition,
  • reach 9.2 million children with educational programs,
  • vaccinate 8.3 million children against measles
  • to provide 19 Million people with clean drinking water,
  • to organize psychosocial help for over two million girls and boys.
