The Brick Router Called the BRCK, an Internet Access for Africa

Power failures and an unreliable internet limit the participation in the digital world which is noticeably also in Zambia. The solution to this problem now comes from a non-profit organisation from Africa itself.

Ushahidi, a Nairobi-based software company, developed a backup router shaped like a brick which is as a hotspot able to combine the internet, SMS and e-mail, to establish a connection to up to 20 other devices and which is supplied with energy by a rechargeable battery for eight hours. This router is known as The BRCK and can serve as a primary connection with the internet in rural, remote areas since it is also able to establish a connection with weather stations and satellite phones.
