KAHBAM: Stop Hidden Hunger

Short description

Joint project on raising awareness [on the issue of hidden hunger] for pregnant women and the local population and financing agro-pastoral projects [crop and livestock production] via microcredits for as well as the development of software for monitoring and evaluation.

Which problem do we aim to solve and why?

The population knows very little about micronutrient-rich foods and has no or only poor access to them. Reasons for this are a high rate of illiteracy, especially among women, the scarcity of [(presumably) affordable and diverse] food products due to the increased industrialization of the food industry and the very low financial power of women in particular.

Our solution
  • Raising public awareness on the issue of hidden hunger
  • Acquisition of land [agricultural plots] for the cultivation of foods rich in micronutrients and livestock husbandry (poultry)
  • Provision of the crop and livestock products to the target population
  • Establishment of a micro-finance fund to support the women involved in the program to develop income-generating activities in order to improve their financial capacity, which will have a positive impact on the quality of family food, [benefitting] especially the children.
  • Development of a software to monitor and evaluate the nutritional status of pregnant women and children between 0 and 3 years.
  • Setting up a website to communicate and disseminate the results of the KAHBAM project

Why is our idea innovative, new and different?
  • Implementation of a micro-finance project that will have a long-term effect on the progress of combating hidden hunger
  • Development of a software for a better assessment of the effectiveness of the project: monitoring the development of the nutritional and health status of the affected children and pregnant women; communication with the regional health authorities.

How is our idea feasible?

  • We are students with profound knowledge in the fields of programming, statistics and economics, which we can contribute to the successful implementation of the project.
  • [We have] geographic knowledge of the region, where hidden hunger prevails, as some group members come from these Areas
  • We receive technical support from professors [of our university] and are supported by the National Institute of Statistics of Côte d’Ivoire.

Which technologies, channels or methods are we planning to use?

Website: a platform for international partners to disseminate and follow our work

Proximity radio: raising awareness of good nutritional practices and informing about project activities [in rural areas]

SMS phone: notification messages to women and their husbands for prenatal appointments, vaccinations and (medical) nutritional advice.

What outcome and what improvements do we expect? How do we measure these?

Objective: the population has a better knowledge of the phenomenon of hidden hunger and uses the acquired knowledge in the daily food preparation; hidden hunger in the affected areas is reduced by half;

Measurement Indicators: blood analysis in children to determine the micronutrient-status; regular interviews to evaluate dietary habits.

Our budget planning & acquisition of potential partners

Project costs (poultry farms, fish farms, fields, microfinance, IT) = 9 650 000 Frz. Francs = 14 734 EUR

Partners: ANADER, INS, CNRA, FIRCA, BAD.
